Bhubaneswar: More than 50,000 nominations were filed for panchayat elections in the state on the third day of the process on Wednesday.
According to a release of secretary, State Election Commission, as many as 37,232 nominations were filed for ward member posts and 8,947 papers for sarpanch posts in the gram panchayats across the state.
Similarly, 6,205 sets of papers were filed by the aspiring candidates for panchayat samiti member posts and 484 nominations for Zilla Parishad member posts on the day.
The process of filing the nomination papers for the three-tier panchayat elections started on January 17 when 8772 sets of papers were filed.
As per the SEC schedule, the candidates can file their nominations till January 21, while scrutiny of papers will be done on January 22. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is January 25 and the final list of candidates will be declared on January 25.
The panchayat elections will be held in five phases from February 16 to 24. Results will be declared on February 26, 27 and 28.
