Sydney: Soon after Pakistan beat South Africa convincingly in a Super 12 Group 2 match at SCG on Thursday, skipper Babar Azam took to Twitter to pray for Imran Khan who was shot at in Wazirabad earlier this evening.

Former Prime Minister and World Cup-winning cricket captain Imran was shot in his foot by unknown assailant during his long march to Islamabad, AFP reported quoting local media.

Imran was lifted and taken in a car to a safe location, before being rushed to a Lahore hospital where doctors said he was out of danger.

“Strongly condemn this heinous attack on @ImranKhanPTI. May Allah keep Kaptaan safe and protect our beloved Pakistan, Ameen,” tweeted the captain from Sydney.

Some of his teammates also wished the former Prime Minister speedy recovery.

“Highly condemn the attack on @ImranKhanPTI. My prayers for the health and speedy recovery of all the injured people and deceased. May Allah SWT protect Pakistan, Ameen,” wrote Fakhar Zaman.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led the condemnation at home.

“I condemn the incident of firing on PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the strongest words. I have directed Interior Minister for an immediate report on the incident. I pray for the recovery and health of PTI chairman & other injured people,” tweeted Sharif.

Imran’s party claimed that it was an assassination attempt on the ex-PM.

Senior PTI leader Asad Umar told ARY News that six people were injured in the attack of whom two were seriously wounded, including local leader Ahmad Chatha.
