Bhubaneswar: On the first day of filing nominations for panchayat elections in the state, as many as 8772 sets of papers were filed on Monday.
According to a State Election Commission (SEC) release, of the total nominations filed on the day, 7116 were filed for ward member posts of gram panchayats.
While 1122 nomination papers were filed for sarpanch posts, 512 nominations were submitted for panchayat samiti member pots.
Similarly, 22 nominations were filed for the posts of zilla parishad member in the state at the end of the first day of filing the papers.
As per the SEC schedule, the candidates can file their nominations from January 17 to 21, while scrutiny of papers will be done on January 22. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is January 25 and the final list of candidates will be declared on January 25.
The three-tier panchayat elections in Odisha will be held in five phases from February 16 to 24. Results will be declared on February 26, 27 and 28.
