Berhampur: Panic gripped Jagdalpur village on the outskirt of Berhampur in Odisha following a series of attacks on women by an unidentified miscreant in the area in the last few days.
According to sources, one woman was attacked twice, while at least two others also faced assault in the village in last five days. The miscreant fled the scene after launching the attack. The reason behind such act by the unknown person is yet to be ascertained.
While the mysterious incidents triggered fear among the residents of the area, villagers are unhappy and annoyed over the inability of the police to apprehend the miscreant.
As per the villagers, the first incident took place on Wednesday when a woman, identified as Babua Padhi, was in her house and the unknown person pushed and hit her. The miscreant lifted some household article and ran away.
On Thursday, another woman, K Bharati Patra was attacked by the miscreant with an iron rod when she was in her house. She sustained injuries on her head, they said.
In yet another incident on Friday, another woman, Kabita Padhi was attacked with a brick when she was standing outside her house. She was taken to the hospital and given medical aid.
However, she was attacked again with a sharp weapon and seriously injured on Sunday morning. While the miscreant fled the scene, the woman was resscued and rushed to Berhampur City Hospital.
Following Sunday’s incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Berhampur, Ramesh Sethi and other police officials visited the village and recorded the statemetns of locals.
No incident had taken place on Saturday when some police personnel in plain clothes were deployed in the village. However, the freah attack on Sunday when police was not deployed has triggered panic amont the villagers.
Police said necessary measures are being taken to identify the miscreant and nab him at the earliest.
