New Delhi: Actor Pankaj Tripathi has voluntarily stepped down as the ‘National Icon’ of Election Commission of India (ECI).
“Acknowledging his role as a political leader in an upcoming film, actor @PankajTripathi has voluntarily stepped down as #ECI National Icon as per terms of MoU. #ECI expresses gratitude for his impactful contribution to voter awareness & #SVEEP since Oct 2022,” an ECI spokesperson posted on X.
Tripathi, who was roped in as ECI’s National Icon in October 2022, is currently engaged in promoting his upcoming film ‘Main Atal Hoon’.
The versatile Tripathi has essayed the role of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the biopic of the former Prime Minister.
In a recent interview, Tripathi spoke of his interest in politics during his younger years and what dissuaded him from taking the plunge.
‘Main Atal Hoon’, directed by Ravi Jadhav, will hit theatres on January 19.
Tripathi said he was honoured to bring Vajpayee’s story to silver screen.
“More than the film, the journey of playing Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee is really close to my heart. The man is truly a legend, and we are honoured to bring his inspiring story to the world. I hope audiences appreciate our efforts to bring in the legacy of Atal ji onto the big screens,” Tripathi said.
