New Delhi: At a time when India and Canada’s diplomatic relations hit a new low, there was a development in the Gurpatwant Singh Pannun case involving India and the US.
The US State Department said on Monday that an Indian enquiry panel set up to probe Washington DC’s allegations of the involvement of an Indian national in a foiled plot to “assassinate” Khalistani extremist Pannun – an American national — will visit the US capital on Tuesday.
Pannun was designated as a terrorist in 2020 by the Indian government.
“The Enquiry Committee will be travelling to Washington DC on October 15th as part of its ongoing investigations to discuss the case, including information they have obtained, and to receive an update from US authorities regarding the US case that is proceeding,” PTI quoted US State Department as saying.
“Additionally, India has informed the United States they are continuing their efforts to investigate other linkages of the former government employee and will determine follow-up steps, as necessary,” the State Department informed.
Last November, US prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta for an assassination plot to eliminate Pannun – of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) — in New York.
Arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2023, Gupta was extradited to the US.
India denied US’ allegations, but constituted an internal investigation team to look into the matter.
