New Delhi: The Paris Olympics 2024 is scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11 this year and this time, India is sending more athletes than it did to Tokyo in 2020, where India won seven medals, including Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold in the men’s javelin throw. It was India’s biggest medal haul in an Olympics.
Countries have quotas at the Games, and athletes can secure them through direct qualification (based on performances at designated competitions during the qualification period) or via world rankings.
The NOC (National Olympic Committee) of each country has exclusive authority for their representation at the Olympics, which means the athletes’ participation depends on the country’s NOC.
India’s first quota place for the Paris Olympics 2024 was filled by trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta, and the first Indians who qualified for track-and-field events were race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh. The Indian men’s hockey team, which won the bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has already qualified for the Paris Olympics.
