Paralakhemundi: A 24-year-old postgraduate student was found dead with partial burn injuries at Paralakhemundi in Odisha’s Gajapati districts on Sunday.
According to sources, neighbours saw smoke billowing from the upper floor of the house and alerted her parents, who were away for some personal work, and police, who broke open the locked room and found the partially burnt body. A scientific investigation team later visited the scene
to collect samples and evidence.
“The 24-year-old sustained burn injuries near the terrace of the house. We reached the spot and found her dead. She had appeared for her PG second-year examination at SKCG Autonomous College,” said Paralakhemundi police station IIC Prashant Bhupati.
He added that preliminary investigations suggest that she poured some flammable substance and set herself ablaze. “Her parents could not provide any information as they were not at home. Further investigation will reveal more details,” he added.
While police have preliminarily ruled the death as suicide, it is being suspected that she was possibly under mental stress since the incident occurred just two days before the declaration of her examination results. The postmortem report will confirm the exact cause of the death, sources added.
