Bhubaneswar: The authorities of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday sealed a shopping mall, Big Bazaar, at Patia in the Odisha capital.
According to BMC sources, the shopping mall was found violating fire safety norms, parking rules and other building amenity guidelines.
The operation to seal the mall began at 8 am in presence of BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary, Deputy Commissioner Srimanta Mishra and other officials.
“It will take us another one hour to seal the entire building. The shopkeepers have been asked to vacate the mall,” the BMC Commissioner said.
The locals had informed BMC officials, who had come for an eviction drive to the locality, about lack of parking facilities at the shopping mall complex. Following which, officials visited the mall and found that there was no parking facility. It also did not have fire safety clearance certificate.
A notice was then served to the owner of the building, Jitendra Prasad Singh, and the entire complex was sealed, the sources added.
“Instead of going to court, the officials formed a mobile court and passed the order to seal the mall. The building will remain sealed till the shopping mall owner furnishes compliance certificate to the competent authorities,” Mishra said.
