Cuttack: A patient, undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city, became critical and had to be shifted to the ICU following alleged transfusion of wrong blood wrong type.
The patient has been identified as Bibhuti Bhusan Jena (74) of Jhola Sahi area. His condition is stated to be stable now.
The patient’s son Abhisek Jena told the media that they went to Central Red Cross Blood Bank to collect A+ blood since he was suffering from shortage of haemoglobin. “His condition worsened within 5 to 10 minutes of transfusion, which was then immediately stopped. We then got the blood tested at a private lab and found that it was B+ type though the packet mentioned A+,” he said.
The requisition form also clearly mentioned A+ blood, he added.
Notably, transfusion with the wrong blood type can cause a severe reaction that may be life-threatening.
Director of the blood bank was quoted by local media as saying that an inquiry will be conducted into the incident after getting a report from the doctor treating the patient.
