Cuttack: Taking note of criminal activities in jails and genuine problems of prisoners in the state, the Orissa High Court on Saturday directed Collectors to pay surprise visits to jails in their respective districts from March 15 as per a directive of the Supreme Court.
The HC directed the collectors to oversee the present infrastructure of the district jails and sub jails, the condition of inmates, the quality of food and ensure regular health check-ups of the inmates.
Regarding criminal activities inside jails, the HC expressed displeasure over the tardy pace of work in installation of CCTV cameras and directed the state government to take immediate steps.
Apart from this, the court sought the details of inmates who are yet to get bail due to minor offenses.
It directed the state government to furnish its report for the next hearing on April 27.
