New Delhi: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India on Sunday asked the government to strengthen the laws to protect animals.

The appeal came in the wake of an elephant’s death in Kerala and a cow being injured due to ingestion of explosives in Himachal Pradesh.

“Such incidents are not just restricted to certain regions, but are happening all over the country. PETA receives more than 100 similar cases every day. People send in their complaints to us, not just for cows and elephants, but for so many other animals as well,” PETA India CEO Manilal Valliyate told news agency ANI.

“These injustices against animals through explosives have been going on for quite a while. But it has received such public attention for the first time,” he added.

A pregnant elephant had died after eating cracker-filled pineapple in Kerala’s Palakkad district on May 27. Similarly, a pregnant cow was injured after ingesting explosives coated with wheat flour at a village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh.
