Allahabad: Rahul Gandhi’s alleged dual citizenship has been under the scanner for some months.
The case stems from a petition which claims that the Congress leader is also a British citizen and calls for the revocation of his Indian citizenship.
The petitioner, advocate and BJP leader Vignesh Shishir, has also sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the citizenship issue of the Raebareli MP.
On Monday, the Allahabad High Court asked the Union Home Ministry to take a decision on the representation raising questions about Rahul’s Indian citizenship.
A bench of Justice Attau Rahman Masoodi and Justice Subhash Vidyarthi issued directions that the Central government should inform the high court about the outcome of the representation on December 19, reported Bar and Bench.
Deputy Solicitor General of India SB Pandey told the high court that a representation made by the petitioner on this issue has been received by the Central government and is under process.
“List this matter on 19th of December, 2024. The outcome of the representation shall be apprised to the Court on the next date of listing,” the bench said.
According to Shishir’s petition, one VSS Sarma had sought details about Rahul’s citizenship from the British government in 2022. On request, Sarma had shared confidential emails he had received from the UK government.
The petitioner has stated that these emails indicate Rahul holds British citizenship, but due to data protection laws in that country, UK authorities have not revealed complete information without a signed letter of authority from Rahul.
A similar petition about Rahul’s citizenship status was filed before the Delhi High Court BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.
The Delhi High Court is likely to hear the matter after ascertaining the status of the petition before Allahabad High Court.
