At a time when petrol and diesel are selling at more than Rs 100 per litre at several places in India, the Tamil Nadu government announced a significant reduction in petrol price on Friday.
In the first budget of DMK-led MK Stalin’s government, Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan said petrol will cost Rs 3 less per litre.
The move will benefit millions of people as the high price of fuel is burning a hole in the pockets of middle-class the country.
“Tamil Nadu has 2.6 crore people using two-wheelers. Rs 3 is reduced for petrol by the Tamil Nadu government. Because of this government will face a Rs 1,160-crore deficit,” the TN minister informed.
People of Odisha and other states will hope their respective state governments take a cue and announce a similar relief.
Petrol and diesel prices crossed the Rs 100 mark for the first time in parts of Odisha on June 22, while a ‘century’ was registered in Bhubaneswar on July 2.
In February, states like Rajasthan, Meghalaya, election-bound West Bengal and Assam had announced a cut in fuel price.
