Bhubaneswar: A PhD scholar of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bhubaneswar, died after being run over by a crane engaged for construction work on the campus, on the outskirts of Jatni, on Tuesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Abhinandan Panda, a scholar of electrical engineering.
According to sources, the incident took place around 9.30 pm while he was walking back home after class. Staff of the institute rushed him to a private hospital, where the doctors pronounced him dead.
Panda was residing near Indradhanu market in Nayapalli here. He was preparing to complete the research work this year and his visa to go to New Zealand was recently approved. He would have presented a research paper at a conference there, said an official of IIT-Bhubaneswar.
Police have launched a probe and efforts are on to nab the crane operator, who fled the spot after the accident.
