Bhadrak: A Plus II girl student died when a speeding car rammed into the bicycle she was riding and dragged her along near Nandapur Chhak under Tihidi police limits in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Monday forenoon.
The deceased has been identified as Prabhasini Nayak, a student of a women’s college in Talapada locality.
According to sources, the accident took place around 11 am on Bhadrak-Chandbali state highway when the girl was crossing the road to reach her college. She got stuck in the bonnet of car, which was en route to Chandbali from Bhadrak, and was dragged for some metres before locals stopped it and thrashed the driver, who was allegedly driving in an inebriated condition.
The girl was taken to a hospital at Tihidi but she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Meanwhile, irate locals damaged the car and staged a roadblock in protest by burning tyres on the road, disrupting traffic movement for a few hours.
The driver was later handed over to Tihidi police, which also seized the body and sent it for postmortem.
