Bhubaneswar: A Plus II first-year student of a private college under Info Valley police limits was found hanging inside his hostel room in Gangapada area of Odisha capital late on Monday.
The boy has been identified as Surjya Prakash Palei.
On being informed, Police and scientific team reached the college campus and initiated a probe after registering a case of unnatural death.
While it is suspected to be a case of suicide, his family members have alleged that he was murdered.
The college authorities told the media that the student was showing symptoms of depression for the past few days. Questions are also being raised as to why the authorities got the body down in the absence of police and rushed it to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, while they claimed that it was done to save the boy.
On September 8, police had seized the body of a Plus III second-year Commerce student of Rajendra University, who was found hanging in his rented accommodation at Shantapada.
A nursing student was found hanging in a hostel room in Odisha capital on September 4 while an 18-year-old girl was found hanging at Badagada on August 26.
According to National Crime Record Bureau’s (NCRB) latest report on accidental deaths and suicides, 1,469 students committed suicide in Odisha in 2020. The state ranked second in terms of suicide among students in the country.
