New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the initiative, aimed at promoting installation of solar panels on rooftops, will be named ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.’
“In order to further sustainable development and people’s wellbeing, we are launching the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month,” Modi wrote on X.
He had announced about his government’s plan to launch an initiative to generate electricity through solar power under the name, ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’, on January 22 after returning home from Ayodhya, wherein he had presided over the consecration ceremony of Ram temple.
THE SCHEME
>> Significant subsidies will be extended to the beneficiaries of the scheme, which will be directly deposited into their bank accounts.
>> To enhance the scheme’s reach at the grassroots level, urban local bodies and panchayats will receive incentives to encourage the adoption of rooftop solar systems within their respective jurisdictions.
>> The initiative is expected to result in increased income, reduced electricity bills, and job creation opportunities for individuals.
>> All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal which will further convenience.

In rooftop installations, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are mounted on the roof of a building, house, or residential property.
In her interim budget 2024-25 speech at Parliament on February 1, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had stated that the rooftop solar initiative, providing incentives for individuals to purchase solar installations and feed surplus energy into the grid, could result in annual savings of Rs 15,000. The allocation for grid-connected solar power for the fiscal 2024-25 stands at an impressive Rs 10,000 crore, a significant increase from the Rs 4,970 crore allocated in 2023-24. Similarly, for grid-connected wind power, Rs 930 crore has been earmarked, compared to the Rs 1,214 crore allocation in 2023-24.
HOW TO APPLY
On pmsuryaghar.gov.in website, go to “Apply for rooftop solar”.

Register in the portal by selecting your State and Electricity Distribution Company
Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
Enter Mobile Number
Enter Email
Step 2
Login with using your Consumer Number & Mobile Number
Apply for the Rooftop Solar as per the form
Step 3
Wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM
Once approved, install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM
Step 4
Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for net meter
Step 5
After installation of net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate commissioning certificate from portal
Step 6
Once you receive the commissioning report, submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. The subsidy will be transferred to your bank account within 30 days.
