Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Bhubaneswar’s notable progress in rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, underscoring the city’s contributions to the Centre’s ‘Catch The Rain’ campaign.
“The message of ‘Catch The Rain’ is very simple: conserve the water right where and when the rain falls… Under this initiative, fresh momentum is being given to rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, the rejuvenation of old water bodies, and tree plantation. I am delighted to see overwhelming participation from people everywhere –be it villages or cities, panchayats or social organisations,” Modi said, highlighting the community-driven initiatives under the campaign in several cities, including Korba in Chhattisgarh, Bhubaneswar in Odisha, and Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh, while urging people to take personal responsibility for at least one nearby water body such as a pond, well, or stepwell to conserve every drop for future generations.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) ramps up urban water resilience measures. The civic body is actively developing shallow aquifer recharge pits across the city to boost groundwater levels, mitigate water-logging, and enhance long-term water security.
Earlier this month, the BMC formally launched a Catch The Rain awareness drive, encouraging residents to install rainwater harvesting systems and join conservation activities.
Modi’s recognition is expected to further motivate local efforts in the state capital and across the country as the annual campaign continues to emphasise citizen participation in securing water resources amid growing climate challenges.
