New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Ukraine war and the recent Wagner mutiny during a telephonic conversation on Friday.
The discussion between the two leaders comes six days after Russia managed to avert a major coup attempt by private mercenary army Wagner Group, headed by former Putin protégé Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Wagner Group troops had taken control of two cities in south Russia before calling off the march to Moscow after Belarusian president Aleksandr Lukashenko helped broker a deal with Prigozhin.
Modi had expressed support for what the Kremlin called Russian leadership’s decisive actions in handling the Wagner group’s mutiny last Saturday.
Putin informed Modi about the recent developments in Russia.
While discussing the situation in Ukraine, the Indian PM reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy to end the conflict, according to a PMO press release.
Both leaders agreed to remain in touch and continue efforts to further strengthen Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
