New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 5G services in the country at an event in the first week of October.
“Taking India’s digital transformation & connectivity to new heights, Hon’ble PM, @narendramodi, will roll out 5G services in India; at India Mobile Congress (IMC), Asia’s largest technology exhibition,” the government’s National Broadband Mission tweeted on Saturday.
IMC — the largest telecom, media, and technology forum in Asia — is jointly organized by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). It’s scheduled to be held from October 1 to 4 at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan.
Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said recently that the government has set a target of 80% coverage of 5G telecom services in the country in a short timeframe.
“The journey of 5G is going to be very exciting… Many countries took multiple years to reach 40% to 50% coverage. But we are targeting a very aggressive timeline and the Government has given a target of 80% coverage in a short time frame and we should definitely cover at least 80% in a very short timeframe,” Vaishnaw said three days ago while addressing an industry event in Delhi.

5G is expected to account for more than a third of total connections in India by 2030, with the share of 2G and 3G dwindling to less than 10%, a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) report said.
According to experts, 5G technology is likely to benefit the Indian economy by Rs 36.4 trillion between 2023 and 2040, estimated GSMA.
