New Delhi: India won a record fifth ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, beating England by four wickets in the final at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Saturday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team. “Extremely proud of our young cricketers. Congratulations to the Indian team for winning ICC U19 World Cup. They have shown great fortitude through the tournament. Their stellar performance at the highest level shows that the future of Indian cricket is in safe and able hands,” Modi tweeted.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly also congratulated the team. The board on Sunday announced cash rewards for the winning team.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced cash reward for the players and the support staff. Each player will get Rs 40 lakh while each support staff is set to get Rs 20 lakh.
Set a target of 190 by England, India, led by Yash Dhull, chased it in 47.4 overs, reaching 195 for six, helped by 50s cracked by Nishant Sindhu and Shaik Rasheed.
Sindhu smashed an unbeaten 50 off 54 balls. Rasheed scored 50 off 84 balls. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Bana finished the chase with two sixes and 14 balls to spare.
For England, Joshua Boyden, James Sales and Thomas Aspinwall took two wickets each.
Earlier, England were bowled out for 189 in 44.5 overs. James Rew smashed 95 runs off 116 balls. Sales remained unbeaten scoring 34 runs off 65 balls.
For India, Raj Bawa took five wickets, while Ravi Kumar dismissed four England batsmen. Kaushal Tambe took one wicket.
India previously won the Under-19 World Cup in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018.
