Balasore: A POCSO court in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday convicted a man in the case of rape of a mentally challenged minor girl and sentenced him to imprisonment for 20 years.
As per the case, an NGO came to know that the 14-year-old girl was pregnant in March last year and started her counselling. The girl revealed to the NGO workers that she was raped by her 28-year-old neighbour several times.
The NGO filed a complaint on the basis of the girl’s revelation. The police also recorded her statement and registered case. Following investigation, the police arrested the accused.
After hearing the case and 10 witnesses and examining evidence, the POCSO court of special judge Ranjan Kumar Sutar in Balasore convicted the accused and announced its order of imprisonment.
The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him. It directed the district legal services authority to give Rs 4 lakh to the girl’s family towards compensation.
