POCSO Court Sentences Private Tutor To 20-Year RI For Rape Of Minor Girl In Odisha’s Jajpur

Jajpur: A POCSO court has convicted a private tutor in a case of rape of a minor girl and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

As per the case, the convict, Mohan Bhuyan of Panikoili in the district was taking tuition classes of the students in a school in 2020. He had raped two of his girl students on separate days the same year.

After the victims’ parents filed complaint against Bhuyan, the police had arrested him. Following investigation, the police had filed chargesheet in both cases in the POCSO court.

After hearing 20 witnesses and verifying the evidence in one case, Judge Abhijit Palai of ADJ and Special POCSO Court, Jajpur sentenced Bhuyan to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years and imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on him. In default of payment of fine, the convict has to go additional RI for 18 months, the sentence stated.

The court also directed the Legal Services Authority to pay a compensation of Rs 7 lakh to the victim. The hearing of the second case against the private tutor is pending in the court.
