Koraput: The Special Fast Track Pocso Court at Jeypore in the district on Tuesday convicted a youth in the case of rape of a minor girl and directed the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh to the victim.
After hearing the statements of 8 witnesses and verifying the evidence produced in the court, Special Pocso Judge Pradip Kumar Sasmal sentenced the convict, Bhabani Sankar Suna, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 15,000. Failing to pay the penalty, the Judge ordered the convict to undergo imprisonment for one more year.
As per the case, the minor girl was staying in the hostel of Sevasram School at Kotpad in the district. While she was going to the school on November 27, 2015, Bhabani, belonging to Liti Maliguda village under Koraput Sadar police limits, abducted her.
After taking her on his bike to Gupteswar forest, the convict raped her and later, left her at the hostel.
On being informed about the incident by the girl, the hostel authorities filed a complaint at Kotpad police station next day. Acting on the complaint, the police arrested Bhabani and forwarded him to the court.
The court ruled that the penalty imposed on the convict would be paid to the victim. Besides, it directed the state government to pay Rs 1.5 lakh towards compensation to the minor girl.
