Dhenkanal: Police have arrested a most wanted dacoit who had remained elusive for the last 15 years in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
Police sources said the dacoit, Nirmal Das of Joranda in the district, had unleashed a reign of terror in his area for the last 15 years.
More than 20 criminal cases including theft, loot and extortion are pending against him in different police stations of the area. Besides Dhenkanal, he was also wanted by police in Jajpur, Angul and Keonjhar districts.
A team of Joranda outpost had arrested Nirmal in 2022. But he managed to escape by giving a slip to police. The officer in-charge (OIC) and a constable were suspended for the incident at the time.
However, following investigation and constant tracking of Nirmal’s criminal activities led Gondia police to arrest him on Sunday. He has been forwarded to court, the sources said.
