Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested a youth from Surat in Gujarat for allegedly raping a minor girl and making her pregnant in Odisha capital.

According to sources, the accused, Sitaram Palei of Tikarapada under Belguntha police limits in Ganjam, had developed relationship with 13-year-old girl around a year back. The families of both boy and girl were staying in Old Town area of the city.

On promising to marry her, Sitaram established physical relationship with the girl. After some time, when the girl got pregnant, her parents came to know about her relationship with Sitaram and took up the matter with his parents.

Sitaram’s family did not take any decision in this regard and instead left Old Town. This led the girl’s father to file a complaint at Shree Lingaraj police station in the city.

The police registered a case and started investigation. Since Sitaram had absconded after the girl’s parents took up the matter, the police tried to trace him.

Finally, the police came to know that Sitaram had fled to Surat, a team went to Gujarat and arrested him. During questioning, he confessed to the crime, the sources said.
