Cuttack: Twin City Commissionerate Police on Tuesday seized around 3340 kg of duplicate Surf Excel detergent during a raid at Tangi and Mahanga areas in Odisha’s Cuttack districts.
According to police sources, the unit was being run by Abhijit Behera along with two other associates. The matter came to light after Malgodown police on April 17 intercepted an autorickshaw, carrying 24 rolls of Surf Excel wrappers, and detained Abhijit, who spilt the beans on the fake detergent manufacturing unit.
Further probe revealed that the packaging of the adulterated detergent was done at Umar village in Salepur and a place under Sadar Police limits in Cuttack before being sold at various markets, including Cuttack city, ACP SN Muduli said.
The illegal manufacturing and adulteration were being done at Khandeita village under Cuttack Sadar police limits and Umer village under Mahanga police limits. Equipment and a huge cache of fake detergent, including 1540 kg of packed detergent, and 1800 kg in loose form were seized during the raid, the sources added.
