Balangir: Police have detained three persons of a woman’s in-law family in connection with her alleged dowry death in Odisha’s Balangir district.
According to police sources, the woman, Namita Bania, was married to Sudam Bania of Burada village under Loisingha police station in the district recently. She reportedly committed suicide on Thursday night.
After Sudam informed Namita’s parents about her death, they rushed to Burada. But before her family arrived in the village on Friday, her in-laws had already cremated her body.
Namita’s family members filed a police complaint alleging that Namita’s in-laws including her husband were torturing her for dowry and killed her as they could not meet their demand.
Namita’s brother said Namita’s in-laws performed her cremation in order to suppress the evidence. But Sudam claimed that she had committed suicide by coming under a train at nearby railway station.
The police registered a case of dowry death and detained Sudam and his parents. They were questioning the detained persons and launched an investigation. Loisingha SDPO said necessary action would be taken against the accused after the investigation.
