Baripada: A police official sustained grievous injuries after being attacked by sand mafias in Kaptipada area of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district during a raid on Wednesday.
According to police reports, an illegal sand storage facility at Dahisahi was raided by Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Kaptipada police station Prakash Rath. As he threatened to take action against the sand mafia for illegal sand mining and trading, he was severely manhandled.
The IIC was mercilessly beaten up by the sand mafia and his associates, including some women. The attackers pelted stones at IIC Rath and his team. They even damaged their vehicle.
Unable to save themselves from the wrath of the attackers, IIC Rath and his team sent a SOS to the police station. Soon more policemen arrived at the spot and rescued IIC Rath, who sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.
Police have registered a case against the sand mafias and initiated a probe into the incident.
