Amit Shukla, the man who cancelled his Zomato order because the delivery executive was a “non-Hindu”, has received a notice by the Madhya Pradesh police. The police have warned him that if he tweets anything “distributing public peace” or “communal amity” in the next six months, he will be jailed, according to a report in NDTV.
Shukla will be under surveillance for violating constitutional provisions where there is no place for any kind of untouchability and acts disturbing religious harmony, the police added.
“Just cancelled an order on Zomato. They allocated a non-Hindu rider for my food. They said they can’t change rider and can’t refund on cancellation,” Shukla had tweeted on Zomato.
Zomato responded by saying, “Food doesn’t have a religion. It is a religion.” This went viral soon and there were praises for the company even from competitors like Uber Eats.
However, there was also backlash on Zomato for labelling eateries as “Halal” and discriminating against Hindus.
“The Halal tag on Zomato is a result of restaurants seeking that distinction, not us as an aggregator,” Zomato said in the letter. “We provide this information, so that you, as a customer, can make an informed choice about whether you want to eat Halal meat, or not. As an aggregator, it’s imperative that we showcase all the various facets that a restaurant would like us to display to its potential customers,” the company added.
