Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack has launched a strict enforcement drive against the bikes using tampered silencers to produce high decibel sound.
According to sources, the Commissionerate Police has decided to seize such bikes and forward the cases to court. The drive has been launched after repeated enforcement drive failed to dissuade the bike owners from altering the silencers.
“During enforcement drive so far, we first issued warning to the bike owners and told them to use the silencers that had been originally fitted by the manufacturing companies. Later, we also imposed penalty on the violators of the norm. Despite the preventive steps, the bike owners continue to change the silencers of their bikes,” said Jayant Dora, ACP, traffic, Bhubaneswar.
Stating that they had received several complaints against the bikes with altered silencers for producing high decibel sound, he said it had become a menace on the streets and was even dangerous for people with heart ailments.
With festive season ahead, it has been decided that the traffic unit of the Commissionerate Police will enforce the drive in the twin cities. The traffic police seized more than 60 such bikes during the drive on Sunday and forwarded those to the court, said the ACP.
