The incident took place when the police personnel had gone to arrest the accused, identified as Saroj Das, in connection with a similar offence allegedly committed by him in the past.
After being attacked by the former defence personnel with a sword, the two injured policemen sustained grievous injuries. The two were rescued by locals and rushed to the Banki Hospital for treatment.
The sub-inspector was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated. Further details are awaited.
It may be noted here that the ex-jawan had earlier tried to unleash terror in the village by waving sword in the air, ransacked an ATM kiosk and attacked policemen who went to nab him.
