Bhubaneswar: Police on Monday took fake doctor Ramesh Swain’s second wife Kamala, a medical officer of a corporate house, on 4-day remand and seized one of her cars.
Kamala, who had been absconding since the arrest of Swain on February 23, was nabbed by the Pink Team of Commissionerate Police from Jharkhand on April 4 on the charge of entering into a criminal conspiracy with the 66-year-old from Kendrapada district, who married 18 women, including highly placed professionals across seven states in over 38 years, by posing as a doctor and allegedly duped them of lakhs of rupees.
Following Kamala’s arrest, police had earlier taken her on five-day remand earlier.
While Swain was a school dropout, his second wife turned out to be a real doctor, who was posted at the corporate house office in Jamnagar in Gujarat. She had got married to the conman in 2002.
Police had arrested another woman who claimed to be Swain’s sister, for allegedly helping him in the fraud. The role of his second wife came to the fore during Swain’s interrogation.
Swain used to target middle-aged single women who sought companionship on matrimonial websites. After getting married, he used to fleece them financially before abandoning them. He identified himself as a deputy director-general under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
His activities came to the fore after a schoolteacher, whom he had married in New Delhi in 2018, lodged a complaint at Mahila Police Station here in July 2021 seeking the help of the law enforcers. Immediately after the case was registered, Swain fled to Assam, where he also had another wife. The fake doctor was nabbed when he returned to his apartment in the city about six months later.
