Police To Install AI Cameras At Bhubaneswar Entry & Exit Points

Bhubaneswar: Advanced AI-powered CCTV cameras with facial recognition capabilities will be installed by the police at the entry and exit points of Bhubaneswar to strengthen security measures.

The advanced surveillance system is proposed to be deployed at key entry and exit locations, including Daya river bridge, Sundarpada-Jatni road near Airfield police station, Patrapada chowk on NH-16, Chandaka Square, Nandankanan-Baranga chowk, Hansapal chowk and Sai Mandira chowk on the Puri bypass route. These points currently lack surveillance cameras, hindering crime investigations, police said.

Revealing the plan on Monday, Twin City Police Commissioner S Deba Datta Singh said the use of AI-enabled cameras will strengthen public safety in these rapidly urbanising cities.

Noting that the new AI technology will play a significant role in spotting both traffic offenders and criminal activities, he said such systems are necessary in maintaining law and order.

Apart from the deployment of AI cameras, steps would be taken to expand closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage and increasing the number of security personnel. These efforts aim to provide the community with thorough surveillance and an improved security system.

Noting that around 1000 CCTV cameras have already been installed at several prominent junctions in Bhubaneswar, the Police Commissioner said that such cameras at present are inadequate in view of population rise and other factors.

As the AI-enabled cameras will be equipped with facial recognition, culprits can be clearly identified and the entire analysis will be AI-enabled. This will bring in more efficiency in the delivery of services, maintaining law and order and other security measures by the police, he said.

The location for the installation of AI cameras has been identified as per an exercise undertaken by respective police stations by taking into account shadow areas, from traffic point of view and on the basis of suggestions from civil society and others.
