Bhubaneswar: Alarmed at a series of burglaries in Bhubaneswar during Dussehra festival, the Commissionerate Police is all set to launch a special drive against criminals ahead of the new year celebrations.

While 2023 is coming to a close, residents of the state capital are preparing to welcome the new year in a grand way. At the same time, marriage season is also round the corner.

Therefore, the Commissionerate Police has decided to strengthen security measures and launch special drives with a focus on surveillance on hotels and inter-state criminals.

Enhanced surveillance is important as many criminals from states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu were found to be involved in various criminal activities in the capital city. Several of them were also nabbed in recent past, sources said.

Apart from intensifying patrolling and checking, police will also create awareness among people about the methods used by criminals to commit crimes and how they can strengthen security in apartments and other residential areas.

According to Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh, the forensics department has recently acquired live finger print scanner, which can help in ascertaining whether any person caught during checking drive has criminal antecedents.

Training is also being given to officers on the new advanced analysis method, he said.
Special are being taken to augment security anticipating what crimes can take place during new year celebrations and wedding ceremonies taking into account previous serious offences.

The aim is to make the city more safe for women and others and the Commissionerate Police is conducting awareness drives in several areas including apartments about new modus operandi being adopted by criminals. People are being told as to how they can take necessary precautions against possible criminal activities.
