Pre-Monsoon Showers In Odisha From Today

Bhubaneswar: Pre-monsoon rain would lash some parts of coastal Odisha from Friday, the India Meteorological Centre (IMD) has said in a release.

According to the forecast, there would be a quick change in the weather conditions in the coastal, north coastal and south Odisha districts in the morning as these areas would get covered with thick clouds and the wind speed increase gradually.

While moderate rainfall would occur at one or two places in these areas, heavy rain would lash some parts of South coastal districts on June 2.

As informed by Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, former Director of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, the intensity of rainfall will increase after June 3 with heavy downpour in some parts of Puri, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur and Khurda districts. While rainfall will continue in the South and North coastal Odisha from June 5, heavy to very heavy rainfall would lash most parts of coastal Odisha and some parts of interior Odisha on June 6 as on this day the southwest monsoon is mostly to hit the state coast.

Sahu also said a cyclonic circulation has formed over the west Assam and its adjoining areas at a height of 900 metres from the sea level. Under its influence, there has been moderate rainfall in some parts of Odisha on Thursday while there is possibility of Nor’wester in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhakdrak, Jajpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Malkangiri districts in the next 24 hours.

People of coastal Odisha have been asked not to venture into the sea as the conditions would be rough due to the wind speed of 45-55 kmph.

Sahu further said the state will have heavy rainfall from June 5 as there is a possibility of formation of a cyclonic circulation over the north-west Bay of Bengal.

“Going by the movement of the monsoon current, the southwest monsoon would cover the whole of Odisha between June 4 and 8,” he pointed out.

Meanwhile, due to the change in the weather condition, temperature fell below 40 degree Celsius in almost all parts of the state on Thursday.
