New Delhi: ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ became law in India after President Droupadi Murmu granted her approval to the Women’s Reservation Bill.
The new law will ensure 33% reservation of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women.
A gazetted notification of Indian government stated that the Bill has become an Act following the President’s nod. “It shall come into force on such date as the central government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint,” it said.
It will take a few years for the law to be implemented as the new census and delimitation has to be completed first.
In a rare show of consensus, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passed the women’s reservation bill during a special session of Parliament earlier this month, with just 2 members voting against it.
