New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday dismissed a mercy plea filed by Vinay Sharma, one of the convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case.
His hand-written note read, “I want to live for my parents, even if it means spending a lifetime in jail. I don’t want to be hanged because the jail-term and the years of struggle have already taught me my lesson.”
The four convicts in the 2012 gang-rape and murder case were supposed to be hanged on Saturday at 6 am. But this was delayed pending the filing of the mercy petition.
Now, the earliest they can be hanged is February 15 as rules require that a convict must be given 14 days between the rejection of the mercy plea and his execution.
