Bhubaneswar: Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu’s village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district finally got electricity connection on Monday.
After Murmu was nominated by ruling NDA at the Centre as its Presidential candidate and Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik extended his BJD party’s support, the state government started electrification work to her ancestral village Uparneda Dungurisahi under Kusumi block on a war-footing.
The officials and workers of Tata Power North Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL) reached Uparbeda and started erecting poles for drawing electricity lines to the village from Saturday.
By Sunday, 20 poles were erected and the houses near those were connected with electricity lines and the transformer installed at the end of the village. By Monday evening, electricity supply to the houses was charged.
Though Murmu does not live in Uparbeda after getting shifted to Rairangpur town, 20 km away, decades ago, her nephew Biranchi Narayan Tudu lives in Dungurisahi with his wife and two children.
Uparbeda village with a population of 3,500 has two hamlets – Badasahi, which is fully electrified, and Dungursahi, which has only 14 households but no electricity.
