Bhubaneswar: On the second day of her visit to Odisha, President Droupadi Murmu visited her alma mater Unit-2 Capital Girls’ High School here on Friday.
She was accorded a warm welcome by students, teachers, and her special 13 classmates, who studied with her from Class VIII to XI (1970- 1974).
“It was a historic moment for us when we learnt about her becoming the President of India. We are so delighted to meet her after 48 years as the country’s first citizen. We are very proud of her,” said one of her classmates.
“She was an obedient student in school days. She was good at sports, and singing, and was very active in social work since her childhood. She was also a part of NCC,” said another friend of the President.
The students and staff had been waiting for her arrival since morning on the school premises. She visited the newly built smart classrooms, an e-library and an e-lab at the school.
“President Droupadi Murmu was on our campus for 20 minutes. She was happy to meet the children and asked for a photo session with them, though it wasn’t on the programme list,” a teacher told the media.
The teacher further said that President spent some time in the room, where she stayed during her school as well as college days at Kuntalakumari Sabat Adivasi Girls Hostel and sat for a while on bed no 3 sharing her memories. She also jotted down some unforgettable memories in the visitor’s diary at the hostel.
The room was renovated and a particular bed, repaired and painted, was put up on display. The school walls were given a fresh coat of colour and decorated with paintings. The students had created a sand art in her honour.
“It was a nostalgic moment. The visit to my alma mater Government Girls High School and Kuntalakumari Sabat Adivasi Girls Hostel brought back many fond memories of my student life,” said Droupadi.
