New York: One of the most-awaited evenings, where fashion and charity come together, saw invitees dressed their best in ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme, some disguised as ‘Jesus’ and ‘Pope’ while cat walking the red carpet.
The fashion event, often called the east coast equivalent of the Oscars is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, on the first Monday of May where celebrities from all over the world shine on with their custom designed costumes. On the 70th edition of this show, Bollywood stars Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone made heads turn with their gorgeous looks.
Priyanka wore a strapeless red Ralph Lauren gown, embellished with a medieval tiara and accessorised her outfit with golden and stone-studded rings and her hair coiffed and mid-parted. Creating her elegant dress and headgear, completely handcrafted with Swarovski crystals, took around 250 hours. Last year, she sported a bold look with a trench coat having a long train, also by Lauren. Last year’s outfit brought her many trolls and a lot of memes circulated on social media.
Deepika, on the other hand, looked smoking hot but failed to adhere to the theme. However, some of her fans also pointed out that ‘Sunday Best’ was a theme that suited her outfit well. She wore a red draped dress designed by Prabal Gurung. Scarlet heels completed the look.
The 2018 Met Gala theme shows the influence of Catholicism on fashion and designers. This invitation-only event also marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition.
