Jaipur: In another incident of human-wildlife clash, a 48-year-old farmer in Rajasthan’s Kotputli-Behror district killed a leopard cub with an axe after it attacked him in his field on Saturday.
The incident sparked panic and anger in the area. The Forest department has announced an inquiry in the leopard cub’s death.
The farmer, identified as Shravan Gurjar, was attacked by the leopard at ar
ound 7 am in Kakadi village when he was collecting fodder for his goats.
Villagers said the leopard emerged from nearby bushes and pounced on Gurjar as he was cutting tree branches. Taken aback by the sudden attack, the farmer sustained serious injuries due to clawing and biting. In a desperate attempt to protect himself, Gurjar struck the animal with an axe, killing it on the spot, villagers claimed.
Forest officials said that the leopard’s carcass has been taken into custody.
Forester Manoj Naga said the department has initiated action in line with wildlife protection rules and an inquiry is underway to ascertain the circumstances under which the incident took place.
The injured farmer was rushed to a government hospital in Alwar, where he is currently undergoing treatment, PTI reported.
