Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed at BJP Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar on Thursday as students staged a demonstration protesting police action on the campus. The protest was held after police picked up a former student.
Sources said the ex-student, identified as Smruti Ranjan Panda, was present at the college campus on Wednesday night when a team of police personnel reached the premises and picked him up.
Angry over the incident, a large number of students came out and staged a protest raising slogans. The angry students blocked the road in front of the college, causing disruption in vehicular movement.
A large number vehicles were stranded for a long time as the irate students reportedly blocked the road connecting the pilgrim town of Puri by burning tyres.
Following the protest, police personnel reached the site and tried to pacify the agitating students.
The protesters said that the former student had come to the college for some test and then went to attend a function as a guest when police reached the campus and took him away.
Classes reportedly remained suspended following the protest, while the students also locked the main gate of the college.
