Puri: Tension gripped Dera ashram here on Friday following a heated argument between some members of the ashram and a group of people, staging a protest condemning the violence that broke out in Punjab and Haryana after a CBI special court pronounced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty in a rape case.
The incident took place when some members of Puri Sachetana Nagarika Mancha gathered in front of the ashram on the Puri-Konark Marine drive and raised slogans against the violence carried out by the Dera supporters.
Anticipating flare up in the situation, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Security at the ashram has been tightened to avoid any untoward incident.
In a related development, the East Coast Railways (ECoR) cancelled Visakhapatnam-Amritsar Hirakud Express via Bhubaneswar due to serious law and order issues in Punjab and Haryana. Around 250 trains enroute to Delhi, Haryana and Punjab were cancelled and all trains from Odisha to Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir will stop at New Delhi due to violence, ECoR sources said.
