Dhaka: Hundreds of students took to the streets in Dhaka during the weekend over the lynching of a trader in broad daylight, as they accused the Muhammad Yunus-headed Interim government of failure to contain mob violence.
Scrap material trader Sohag was brutally killed for allegedly refusing to pay extortion money near the Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka area on Wednesday, reported PTI.
A video of the lynching, which went viral later, showed Sohag being pushed to the ground and his head smashed with chunks of concrete slabs.
The attackers, allegedly belonging to BNP student wing ‘Jubo Dol’, were seen dancing on Sohag’s body after confirming he was dead.
“People screamed, but no one dared to intervene — because the main perpetrator, Moin, is a candidate for General Secretary of Jubo Dal’s Chawkbazar unit,” an X user posted.
According to Prothom Alo newspaper, a murder case has been filed with Kotwali police station in the capital city by Sohag’s sister Manjuara Begum. Nineteen persons have been named in the case, as well as another 15-20 unidentified suspects.
Students from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, BRAC University, NSU, East West University and government-run Eden College took out protests.
“Who gave you beasts the right to kill people? What is the Interim (government) doing when extortionists are carrying out mayhem?” was among the slogans chanted by students.
