New Delhi: The Mumbai-bound Punjab Mail was on Monday diverted from Rohtak to Rewari, thus skipping Delhi.
Since around 1000 farmers were on board that train, there was widespread speculation on social media that the Punjab Mail had been diverted to prevent farmers from reaching protest sites in the capital.
Social activist Yogendra Yadav tweeted: “Breaking: Ferozpur Mumbai Punjab Mail diverted from Rohtak to Rewari this morning to prevent about 1000 farmers from reaching Delhi”.
Cornered Railway officials said the train had been diverted due to operational reasons.
“There were operational constraints, that’s why the train had to be diverted,” Northern Railway spokesman Deepak Kumar told The Indian Express.
Another official was quoted as saying that there was a technical fault near Shakurbasti station, in Delhi.
