PV Sindhu, Amit Rohidas & Teammates Inch Closer To Olympic Medals

Tokyo: After weighlifter Mirabai Chanu won the first medal for India on the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics, hopes of a second medal continued to grow on Thursday.

Reigning world champion of badminton, PV Sindhu sailed into the women’s singles quarterfinals after beating Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in straight games here on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Indian, who had won a silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics, notched up a 21-15 21-13 win over 13th seed Blichfeldt in a 41-minute match.

Sindhu will next face the winner of the match between Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and Korea’s Kim Gaeun.

Men’s Hockey

Varun Kumar, Vivek Prasad and Hamranpreet Singh scored a goal each as the Indian Men’s Hockey team advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Argentina 3-1 in a group match on Thursday.

India were the dominant team throughout the game against Argentina, the gold medallist team in Rio Olympics.

Boxing

India’s Satish Kumar won his bout against Ricardo Brown of Jamaica 4-1 in the Round of 16 of men’s super-heavy (+91kg) category to seal a quarterfinal berth.

Big Upset

Indian archer Atanu Das shocked London Olympics gold medallist Oh Jin Hyek in a nail-biting finish to make it to the 1/8 elimination round in the men’s individual archery event at the Tokyo Games.
