Bhubaneswar: A man allegedly stabbed his father death in Mancheswar area of Bhubaneswar in early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Sunil Choudhary (68), a retired Nalco official.
According to sources, the incident took place at an apartment at Rangamatia. The accused, Anirudh Choudhary, is a lawyer and worked as an assistant professor at a private law university here. The victim was stabbed on the chest and abdomen when he was asleep. Anirudha’s mother was present when he committed the ghastly crime and she telephoned their neighbours at around 4 am in a bid to save him. The neighbours rushed him to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
Speaking to the media, Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh said that a case has been registered under Section 103 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the accused son has been arrested. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had a debt amounting to lakhs of rupees and was under depression. His father refused to help him pay it off leading to a quarrel and the subsequent stabbing incident,” he said.
The DCP further stated that the weapon of offence has been seized and a scientific team is collecting evidence from the spot. “The body too has been sent to Capital Hospital here for postmortem and statements of his wife and relatives will be recorded,” he added.
While Sunil stayed with his wife at a flat in Rangamatia area, Anirudha lived with his spouse in a nearby apartment. Anirudha’s wife left for her parents’ house on June 28 after which he went to his parent’s place. He had resigned from his job on Tuesday and was upset as he had loans amounting to about Rs 25 lakh, sources said.
Anirudha, however, did not attempt to flee and was present in the apartment when the police arrived.
