Khurda: With hard work and determination, 30-year-old Prafulla Mohapatra from Arikama village of Bolagarh Block in the district has set an example for others to emulate. He has emerged as one of the leading quail farmers in the state.
Everyone cannot master quail farming. Prafulla had to learn farming by trial and error method. He still continues to adhere to poultry business.
After learning quail farming from YouTube, Prafulla launched the business at an investment of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakhs and now he earns to his satisfaction. A quail bird weighs anywhere between 220 grams and 270 grams.
“People from the neighbouring districts come here to buy quail meat which contains more protein than meat of broiler chicken. It is also considered good for hypertension and diabetes,” Prafulla claimed. “It’s more delicious and cheaper than other meats. Each quail bird costs about Rs 60,” he added.
Prafulla has been operating in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal and Nayagarh. Small traders from different areas come to him to buy quails. “We are happy that one of our fellow villagers has started farming quail. We love to eat its meat and eggs,” said a villager.
